|General Mills Campaign Unlocks Mobile RewardsSource: (Food Dive August 16, 2021) The shift in consumer habits drove a 39% gain in e-commerce sales from a year earlier during the first quarter of 2021, according to the Census Bureau. The growth was faster than the 17% gain in total retail sales that included spending at brick-and-mortar stores. Because General Mills gathers a variety of shopper data through Box Tops, it’s better positioned for marketing partnerships with brands in non-food categories that also end up in shopping carts as consumers seek greater convenience. Keurig Dr Pepper Launches Pepper Perks Loyalty ProgramSource: (Food Dive August 18, 2021) Keurig Dr Pepper is looking to reward its frequent buyers with exclusives such as new flavors, which have proven popular with the soda category’s young core customer base. The Pepper Perks rewards program could provide the beverage maker with an opportunity to solidify brand loyalty among some of its most frequent Dr Pepper consumers. A recent study by Merkle found that 81% of consumers wanted to form a relationship with brands. Meanwhile, 58% of respondents said that special offers and prizes are the most important ways for brands to recognize their loyalty as customers. Learn more

Oatly Forecasts Annual Revenue SurgeSource: (Reuters August 16, 2021) Founded in 1990, Oatly has ridden a wave of interest in plant-based food in recent years, led by millennials and Gen Z consumers, who are more than willing to spend on sustainable products that are also healthy. Oatly, whose backers included celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Jay Z, said it was especially benefiting from its exclusive U.S. oatmilk supply agreement with Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O), with the coffee chain accounting for 27% of sales in the second quarter. Walmart on Pace to Reach $75B in E-Commerce SalesSource: (Grocery Dive August 17, 2021) John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart’s U.S. operations, said “Recently, the category’s momentum has been driven by added capacity in Walmart’s supply chain network, growth in pickup and e-commerce in food, and product improvements in produce and meat”. E-commerce sales grew 6% against the same period in 2020, a quarter in which the retailer’s digital sales nearly doubled due to pandemic-driven online shopping and consumer stockpiling more. Albertsons Rolls Out Subscription Service, Loyalty ProgramSource: (DSN August 17, 2021) Albertsons has been expanding the range of digital services it offers customers in the past few months. These include a partnership with the Fetch Rewards consumer loyalty and shopper rewards app to send its users personalized offers, as well as on-demand delivery programs provided in collaborations with DoorDash, Uber, and Anycart. Tattersfield, Krispy Kreme president and CEO, said “Building out our e-commerce capability is the primary means for driving frequency,” he explained. “And in the first half of the year, 19% of our global retail sales were from e-commerce, a proportion we expect to keep growing.
